Unobtainium RAW is what happens when a meticulous Klon style overdrive meets two of the most mythical Dumble style amp voices ever captured in a pedal, then gets pushed into rarer territory. The right side stays faithful to a last detail recreation of the K circuit, while the left side delivers two D inspired amplifier voicings that feel like you just found the unobtainable head you have been chasing for years. It is a dual engine built for players who want their touch, pick attack and guitar volume knob to actually matter.
The RAW edition’s headline move is inside the K side clipping section: a set of hand selected New Old Stock Mullard/Valvo labelled OC45 germanium transistors from the 60s. This is the first K type circuit to feature germanium transistors, and the result is not a small tweak. After trying many germanium types, Crazy Tube Circuits landed on OC45 because it adds a supernatural feel, with organic compression that translates into more gain, more sustain and a bloom that makes single notes hang on like they are breathing. And if you want the familiar baseline, it is still right there. In the stock setting you get the classic character with germanium diode clipping like the original unit, so you can jump between familiar and otherworldly without losing the core identity.
On the D side, RAW leans more glassy and punchy than the standard version. Imagine singing blues rock and classic rock tones that cut through a dense band mix without getting spiky. Think of that rock and jazz toggle living in the rock position: clearer top end, tighter low end, and the kind of dynamic response that flatters everything from vintage single coils to hot humbuckers. It is the amp in a box section that makes you play longer because it sounds finished the moment you hit the first chord.
Just like the standard version, Unobtainium RAW includes a passive effects loop, which is a power feature for real world boards. You can place your favorite pedals between your booster or overdrive and the amp in a box section, or treat the two sides as separate independent effects if you run an external bypass switcher or looper. One important note: pedals placed in that passive loop remain in the signal chain even when one or both sections are bypassed, so plan your routing accordingly.
For players using loop switchers and remote controllers, the power up bypass and engage pre set function is a deceptively big deal. You decide the state each footswitch will default to when you plug in power, which means your rig boots up exactly the way you need it, every time. Set it once, control it from the switcher, and stop tap dancing.
Main sonic differences at a glance
K side
Standard version MOD setting uses silicon diodes added alongside the stock germanium diodes for higher output and less compression
RAW version OC45 setting swaps the stock germanium diodes for NOS Mullard or Valvo OC45 germanium transistors, delivering higher gain, more sustain and richer compression
D side
Standard version leans smoother with jazz and blues oriented tones
RAW version is glassier and more blues rock oriented with extra punch and cut
Unobtainium RAW is not here to replace the standard pedal. It is a limited run built in small quantities and will exist only as long as there is stock of those beautiful NOS Mullard or Valvo OC45 transistors. When they are gone, that particular magic is gone.
Warning: This unit was designed for 9V DC input only. Do not use a higher voltage power supply.
